Biography

Erkki-Sven Tüür was born on 16 October 1959 in Kärdla on the island of Hiiumaa. He studied percussion and flute at the Tallinn Music School and, from 1980 to 1984, composition under Jaan Rääts at the Tallinn Conservatory, also taking private lessons with Lepo Sumera. From 1979 to 1983 he was composer, flutist and frontman of the progressive rock band In Spe before devoting himself exclusively to composition from 1992 onward. His output includes nine symphonies, numerous instrumental concertos, chamber music, and, with 'Wallenberg' (2001), one opera; he has received the Estonian Culture Prize (1997) and, in 2014, the Culture Prize of the Republic of Estonia, among other honours.
