Biography
Enrique Granados was born in Lleida in 1867 and grew up in Barcelona, where he studied piano with Joan Baptista Pujol and composition with Felipe Pedrell. Pedrell steered him toward Spanish, and particularly Catalan, folk-music traditions. In 1901 Granados founded the Academia Granados in Barcelona, which trained numerous Spanish pianists. He achieved international fame chiefly through his piano suite "Goyescas" (1911), inspired by Francisco Goya's paintings, which he later expanded into an opera of the same name. After the opera's New York premiere, Granados and his wife drowned in 1916 when the cross-Channel steamer Sussex, on their return voyage, was torpedoed by a German U-boat.
