Biography

Emre Akal was born in Munich in 1981, where he still lives and works as an author and director. His work operates at the intersection of choreography, installation and image composition and has been shown at venues including the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, the Schauspielhaus Graz, the Schauspiel Leipzig and the Theater Münster, as well as in the independent theatre scenes of Munich, Stuttgart and Vienna. In 2019 he initiated Ayse X Staatstheater, a social sculpture conceived as a counter-model to institutional theatre. He has received several awards for his plays, including the exil-Dramatiker*innenpreis of the Wiener Wortstätten, the Förderpreis für Theater of the city of Munich, and the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize for Literature. Since the 2025/26 season he has been resident playwright (Hausautor) at the Nationaltheater Mannheim.
