Biography
Emilio de' Cavalieri was born in Rome in 1550 and died there in 1602. From 1578 he worked as a musician and organizer of sacred music in Rome before moving to Florence in 1588 to serve Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici, where he helped stage the intermedi for the Duke's 1589 wedding celebrations, among other projects. As a member of the Roman School, he was a pioneer of accompanied solo song (monody) and the basso continuo, techniques central to the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music. His principal work, Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo, to a libretto by Agostino Manni, was first performed in February 1600 at the Oratorio dei Filippini in Rome and ranks among the earliest fully surviving staged works with through-composed music.
