Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek

Biography

Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek was born in Vienna in 1860 into an Austrian noble family and studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, among others with Carl Reinecke. He worked as a theatre conductor in several cities before his comic opera "Donna Diana" brought him international recognition in 1894. From 1903 he lived in Berlin, where he became a professor and member of the Prussian Academy of Arts and wrote, among other works, the opera "Ritter Blaubart" (1920). During the Nazi era he represented Germany on the Permanent Council for the International Cooperation of Composers initiated by Richard Strauss. Reznicek died in Berlin in 1945 of typhus, weakened by a stroke he had suffered in 1943.
