Biography
Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre was born in Paris in 1665, the daughter of organ builder and organist Claude Jacquet, and trained early on the harpsichord. At the age of five she already performed before Louis XIV, who subsequently supported her at court and placed her under the care of his mistress, Madame de Montespan. In 1684 she married the organist Marin de La Guerre. She published harpsichord suites, sonatas and cantatas, and with Céphale et Procris (1694) composed the first opera by a female composer to be staged at the Paris Opéra. She died in Paris in 1729.
