Biography

Eduard Tubin was born in 1905 in Torila, Estonia, and studied at the Tartu Higher Music School under Heino Eller. In 1944 he fled the Soviet occupation of Estonia for Sweden, where he supported himself partly by restoring historical operas at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre. He composed ten symphonies, two operas — including Barbara von Tisenhusen — and the ballet Kratt, based on Estonian folk music. His work remained largely unknown in Soviet-occupied Estonia for decades, until conductor Neeme Järvi brought his symphonies to international attention from the 1980s onward. Tubin received the Kurt Atterberg Prize in 1979 and died in Stockholm in 1982.
