Biography
Édouard Lalo was born on 27 January 1823 in Lille, into a family of Spanish military descent that had settled in France, and died on 22 April 1892 in Paris. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1839, studying violin under François-Antoine Habeneck, and for years earned his living chiefly as a chamber musician and teacher. Public success came only around 1870, above all with the Symphonie espagnole (1874) and the Cello Concerto in D minor (1877). His opera Le roi d'Ys, on which he worked from 1875 but which was not staged until 1888, became his greatest success in the theatre. Lalo's music combines the German Romantic tradition with a colourful, often Spanish-tinged sound world and influenced later composers such as Claude Debussy.
