Biography

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on 19 January 1809, the son of two actors, and after his mother's early death grew up with the merchant family of John Allan in Richmond, Virginia, without ever being formally adopted. After leaving the University of Virginia and the military academy at West Point without a degree, he worked as an editor and critic for several magazines in Richmond, Philadelphia and New York, establishing himself as a master of the uncanny short story with tales such as "The Fall of the House of Usher." In 1835 he made his only attempt at a stage play with the unfinished verse drama "Politian." His 1845 poem "The Raven" brought him his greatest literary success, while stories such as "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" also mark him as the founder of detective fiction. Poe died on 7 October 1849 in Baltimore under circumstances that remain unexplained to this day.
