Biography
Dustin Lance Black was born in 1974 in Sacramento, California, and grew up in a Mormon household in Texas and California. His screenplay for Milk, about the civil-rights leader Harvey Milk, won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and he went on to write the screenplay for J. Edgar, among others. In 2011 he turned the trial transcripts of Perry v. Schwarzenegger into the play 8, tracing the court case that overturned California's Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage. For television he created the miniseries When We Rise (2017), on the history of the American LGBTQ movement. Black is a co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which brought the case against Proposition 8.
