Domenico Sarro

1679 – 1744 · Italian

Biography

Domenico Sarro was born on 24 December 1679 in Trani and came to Naples as a child, where he trained at the Sant'Onofrio conservatory and remained for the rest of his life. In 1704 he was appointed deputy court Kapellmeister in Naples; from 1735 he stood in for the ailing Francesco Mancini and formally took over as court Kapellmeister after Mancini's death in 1737. With 'Didone abbandonata' (1724) he became the first composer ever to set a libretto by Pietro Metastasio, beginning a long collaboration between the two; in 1737 his opera 'Achille in Sciro' inaugurated the newly built Teatro di San Carlo. Sarro died in Naples in 1744.
