Biography

Dmitri Bortniansky was born in 1751 in Hlukhiv, in what is now Ukraine, and came as a child to the tsar's court in St Petersburg, where he sang in the court choir and studied with Baldassare Galuppi. From 1769 to 1779 he continued his training in Italy, composing several operas to Italian librettos there, including "Creonte" (Venice, 1776) and "Alcide" (Venice, 1778). On his return to Russia he was appointed director of the imperial court chapel choir in 1796, a post from which he shaped the country's sacred music for decades. His extensive output of church music — choral concertos, motets and liturgical settings — also influenced church music in Germany during the nineteenth century. Bortniansky died in St Petersburg in 1825.
