Biography

Darius Milhaud was born in 1892 in Aix-en-Provence into a Jewish family and studied at the Paris Conservatoire, among others with Charles-Marie Widor. From 1917 to 1919 he worked in Brazil as secretary to the poet and diplomat Paul Claudel, beginning a decades-long artistic partnership that later produced the opera Christophe Colomb. In 1920 the critic Henri Collet grouped him with Les Six alongside Poulenc, Honegger and Auric. A 1922 trip to New York, where he heard jazz in Harlem, shaped works such as the ballet La Création du monde. In 1940 he emigrated to the United States and taught at Mills College in Oakland, and from 1947 also at the Paris Conservatoire; he died in Geneva in 1974.
