Daniel Wetzel

Biography

Daniel Wetzel was born in Konstanz in 1969 and studied Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen. Since 2000 he has been developing plays, radio plays, films and installations with Helgard Haug and Stefan Kaegi under the name Rimini Protokoll, working as a duo, a trio or on his own. These works typically feature performers without acting training who contribute knowledge from their jobs and everyday lives as “experts”. Joint projects include “Wallenstein – eine dokumentarische Inszenierung” (2006), “Karl Marx: Das Kapital, Erster Band”, “Hauptversammlung” (Annual Shareholders Meeting, 2009), “Situation Rooms” (2013) and “Adolf Hitler: Mein Kampf, Vol. 1 & 2”; his own works include “Evros Walk Water” (2017) and “SWEAT. A MuscLical” (2025). With Rimini Protokoll he received, among others, the Mülheim Dramatist Prize and the German theatre award Der Faust (both 2007), the European Theatre Prize (2008), the Silver Lion of the Venice Theatre Biennale (2011), the German Audiobook Prize (2015) and the Swiss Grand Prix Theatre/Hans Reinhart Ring (2015).
