Biography

Daniel Kehlmann was born in Munich in 1975 and grew up in Vienna, where he studied philosophy and German literature; his thesis examined Friedrich Schiller's theory of alienation. His novel "Measuring the World", about Carl Friedrich Gauss and Alexander von Humboldt, brought him international recognition in 2005. Later works include "Fame" (2009), "F" (2013) and the historical novel "Tyll" (2017), which places the legend of Till Eulenspiegel in the Thirty Years' War and was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2020. Kehlmann received the Kleist Prize in 2006, the Thomas Mann Prize in 2008 and the Ludwig Börne Prize in 2024. He has held the Eberhard Berent Chair at New York University since 2015 and divides his time between Berlin and New York.
