Christopher Rüping

Biography

Christopher Rüping was born in Hanover in 1985 and studied directing at the Theaterakademie Hamburg and the Zurich University of the Arts. His first productions were staged at Thalia Theater Hamburg, Deutsches Theater Berlin and Staatstheater Stuttgart, where “Das Fest” earned him his first invitation to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2015. From 2016 to 2019 he was a house director at the Münchner Kammerspiele, and from 2019 to 2024 he held the same role at Schauspielhaus Zürich. His best-known work includes Brecht’s “Trommeln in der Nacht”, the roughly ten-hour project on ancient drama “Dionysos Stadt” and the trilogy “Einfach das Ende der Welt” (2020), “Brüste und Eier” (2022) and “Trauer ist das Ding mit Federn” (2024). Theater heute named him director of the year in 2019 and 2021, and in 2025 he received the Theaterpreis Berlin. “Deutscher Herbst”, an evening he created with texts by Stig Dagerman, Caspar David Friedrich and Blümchen, was made in 2026 as a co-production of Deutsches Theater Berlin and the Ruhrtriennale.
