Biography
Christopher Marlowe was baptised in Canterbury in February 1564 and stabbed to death in Deptford, near London, on 30 May 1593. The son of a shoemaker, he attended the King's School in Canterbury before studying at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, earning his bachelor's degree in 1584 and his master's in 1587; a letter from the Privy Council urging the university to grant his degree regardless suggests his frequent absences were connected to service for Elizabeth I's secret service. With plays such as Tamburlaine, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, Edward II and The Massacre at Paris, he decisively shaped English blank verse and the history tragedy within a few short years, before being killed in a tavern brawl in Deptford days after being summoned before the Privy Council on a charge of blasphemy.
