Biography
Charlotte Brontë was born on 21 April 1816 in Thornton, Yorkshire, the daughter of the Irish clergyman Patrick Brontë, and grew up with her sisters Emily and Anne in Haworth. After brief spells at school and some years as a teacher and governess, she studied French in Brussels in 1842 before turning, with her sisters, entirely to writing. In 1847 she published her novel Jane Eyre under the male pseudonym Currer Bell, which made her one of the best-known novelists of Victorian literature; Shirley (1849) and Villette (1853) followed. She married Arthur Bell Nicholls in 1854 and died on 31 March 1855 in Haworth.
