Biography
Charles Wuorinen was born in New York City in 1938 and died there in 2020. He studied at Columbia University, where in 1962 he co-founded the Group for Contemporary Music, an ensemble dedicated to promoting new music. In 1970 he became, at the time, the youngest composer to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Music, for his electronic work 'Time's Encomium', and he later also received a MacArthur Fellowship. Wuorinen composed more than 260 works, including operas, concertos and chamber music, and taught at Columbia, Princeton and Yale universities, among others. One of his major late works is the opera 'Brokeback Mountain', after Annie Proulx, which premiered in Madrid in 2014.
