Biography
Carlo Gozzi was born on 13 December 1720 in Venice and died there on 4 April 1806. He did not begin writing for the stage until the age of 41, opening with "The Love of Three Oranges" (1761), the first of ten "fiabe teatrali" — elaborately fantastical fairy-tale plays — which also include "Turandot" (1762). Gozzi saw his plays as a defence of the traditional commedia dell'arte against the realistic character comedies of his rivals Carlo Goldoni and Pietro Chiari, whom he accused of betraying Venetian theatrical tradition. After early success, his work fell into relative obscurity for a time, but was rediscovered by the German Romantics and later influenced composers such as Busoni, Prokofiev and Puccini.
