Carlo Goldoni

1707 – 1793 · Italian

Biography

Carlo Goldoni was born in Venice in 1707 and initially studied law before devoting himself fully to the theatre. From the late 1730s he wrote for Venetian stages, and his theatrical reform gradually replaced the improvised masks of commedia dell'arte with fully scripted, psychologically drawn characters. In the 1750/51 season he wrote sixteen new comedies within a single year to fulfil a wager he had made, among them "The Coffee House" and "Mirandolina". In 1762 he moved to Paris to direct the Comédie-Italienne, later also teaching Italian to the French princesses. He died in Paris in 1793.
