Biography
Carlo Coccia was born in Naples in 1782 and trained under Giovanni Paisiello, who introduced him to King Joseph Bonaparte. After early operatic successes in Venice, including Arrighetto (1813) and Clotilde (1815), he was increasingly overshadowed by the rising Rossini and left for Lisbon and later London in 1820. On returning to Italy he directed the music conservatory in Turin from 1828 and became choirmaster of Novara Cathedral in 1840, a post he held for more than thirty years. He died in Novara in 1873.
