Carl Nielsen

Biography

Carl Nielsen was born on 9 June 1865 near Nørre Lyndelse on the island of Funen, into a musical but poor family. He worked as a military bandsman in Odense before studying violin and music theory at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen from 1884 to 1886, under teachers including Niels W. Gade. From 1889 he played violin, and from 1908 also conducted, at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. His output includes six symphonies, the operas Saul og David and Maskarade, and concertos for violin, flute and clarinet. Nielsen is regarded as the leading Danish composer of his time; he died on 3 October 1931 in Copenhagen.
