Biography
Carl Millöcker was born on 29 April 1842 in Vienna and died on 31 December 1899 in Baden bei Wien. He studied flute at the Conservatory of the Society of Music Friends and received composition lessons from his patron Franz von Suppé. At sixteen he became a flutist at the Theater in der Josefstadt, and from 1864 he worked as a conductor at the Thalia-Theater in Graz and later in Vienna and Budapest. From 1869 to 1883 he served as second conductor at the Theater an der Wien before devoting himself entirely to composition. His operetta "Der Bettelstudent" (1882) became his greatest success; other well-known works include "Gasparone" (1884), "Das verwunschene Schloss" (1878), and "Apajune, der Wassermann" (1880). Millöcker's music is noted for its melodic richness and popular tone and is counted among the golden age of Viennese operetta.
