Biography
Carl Michael Ziehrer was born on 2 May 1843 in Vienna and died there on 14 November 1922. He studied under Simon Sechter and initially led his own civilian orchestra before becoming a military bandmaster, touring Europe and, in 1893, the World's Fair in Chicago. His breakthrough as an operetta composer came in 1898 with 'Der schöne Rigo', followed a year later by his greatest stage success, 'Die Landstreicher', which ran for around 1,600 performances. In 1907 he was appointed the fourth and last Imperial and Royal Ball Music Director after the three Strauss conductors; in 1897 he co-founded the Austrian performing rights society AKM.
