Biography
Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf was born in Vienna in 1739 and died in 1799 in Neuhof, Bohemia. He received violin lessons as a child and gained early success as a violin virtuoso before becoming Kapellmeister to several prince-bishops, most notably at the court of Philipp Gotthard von Schaffgotsch. He was ennobled in 1773. Alongside some 120 symphonies, including six based on Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', he composed more than 30 operas; his best-known work, the singspiel 'Doktor und Apotheker', became the greatest stage success of its era in 1786. During his lifetime he ranked alongside Haydn and Mozart as one of Vienna's most sought-after composers, though he later fell largely into obscurity.
