Biography
Brian Friel was born on 9 January 1929 in Killyclogher near Omagh, County Tyrone, and died on 2 October 2015 in Greencastle, County Donegal. After training and working as a teacher until 1960, he turned to writing full-time and achieved international recognition with plays such as "Philadelphia, Here I Come!" (1964) and "Dancing at Lughnasa" (1990). In 1980 he co-founded the Field Day Theatre Company with actor Stephen Rea, which sought cultural understanding across the sectarian divide during the Troubles and launched with "Translations" as its first production. Often compared to Anton Chekhov, Friel is regarded as one of the most significant Irish playwrights of the twentieth century.
