Betty Comden

Biography

Betty Comden was born in Brooklyn in 1917 and graduated from New York University in 1938. In the late 1930s she founded the cabaret troupe The Revuers with Adolph Green and Judy Holliday, which performed at the Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village. With Green and the composer Leonard Bernstein she wrote the musical On the Town (1944), followed by works including Wonderful Town (1953), Bells Are Ringing (1956, music by Jule Styne) and On the Twentieth Century (1978). For Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer the duo wrote the screenplays for Singin' in the Rain (1952) and The Band Wagon (1953) and received two Academy Award nominations. Comden and Green won several Tony Awards for their stage work, among them for Hallelujah, Baby!, On the Twentieth Century and The Will Rogers Follies, and both received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1991. Comden died in New York in 2006.
