Biography

Barbara Bürk was born in Cologne in 1965, studied directing at the Theaterakademie Ulm and initially worked as an actress herself. From 1995 to 1998 she was an assistant director at the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus in Hamburg, where she worked with Christoph Marthaler, Frank Castorf, Johann Kresnik and Dimiter Gotscheff, among others. She has directed her own productions since 1998, in Hamburg as well as in Stuttgart, Basel, Dresden, Hanover, Frankfurt am Main and Düsseldorf. For “Alice im Wunderland” at the Junges SchauSpielHaus Hamburg she received the Der Faust theatre award in 2012. Together with Clemens Sienknecht she created “Effi Briest – allerdings mit anderem Text und auch anderer Melodie” (2015/16 season), which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2016 and won the Hamburg Rolf Mares theatre prize. The two continued the series with “Anna Karenina”, “Die Nibelungen” and, in 2025, “Kabale und Liebe”, among others.
