Biography
Bára Gísladóttir was born in Reykjavík in 1989. She studied composition at the Iceland University of the Arts, at the Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” in Milan and at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where she completed a master's degree and an advanced postgraduate diploma. As a double bassist she mainly performs her own music, solo or in her long-standing duo with Skúli Sverrisson, and she was a member of the Elja Ensemble; she performed her double bass concerto “Hringla” with Copenhagen Phil and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Her recordings have appeared on labels including Dacapo and Sono Luminus, among them the album “SILVA” (2023). She received talent prizes from the Carl Nielsen foundation and the Léonie Sonning foundation, was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2022 and won an Ernst von Siemens Composer Prize in 2024. For Deutsche Oper Berlin she wrote the music-theatre work “Good Vibes Only”, whose premiere is scheduled for January 2027.
