Biography
Augusta Holmès was born in 1847 in Paris, the daughter of an Irish officer, and received serious musical training — including with César Franck — only after her mother, who had opposed a musical career for her, died. She was a close friend of Franz Liszt and an ardent admirer of Richard Wagner, whose example she followed by writing most of the texts for her own choral and stage works herself. She took French citizenship in 1871. With her opera "La montagne noire," she became, in 1895, the first female composer to have a work staged at the Paris Opera; she died in Paris in 1903.
