Biography

Astor Piazzolla was born on 11 March 1921 in Mar del Plata, the son of Italian immigrants, and grew up from 1925 in New York, where he learned piano and bandoneon. The family returned to Buenos Aires in 1937, and from 1939 he played in Aníbal Troilo’s orchestra while studying composition with Alberto Ginastera from 1940. A scholarship took him to Paris in 1954 to study with Nadia Boulanger. In 1955 he founded the Octeto Buenos Aires and, with the nuevo tango, created a reinterpretation of tango informed by classical, jazz and popular music. Piazzolla died on 4 July 1992 in Buenos Aires, leaving behind several hundred compositions, including the „tango operita“ „María de Buenos Aires.“
