Arthur Honegger

1892 – 1955 · Swiss

Biography

Arthur Honegger was born on 10 March 1892 in Le Havre, France, to Swiss parents, and died on 27 November 1955 in Paris; he retained Swiss citizenship throughout his life. After early studies in Le Havre and at the Zurich Conservatory, he continued his training at the Paris Conservatoire, where he met Darius Milhaud and Jacques Ibert. In 1920 critic Henri Collet grouped him with the "Groupe des Six" around Jean Cocteau, though he soon pursued his own, more serious path. He became known chiefly for the dramatic oratorio "Le Roi David" (1921) and the orchestral piece "Pacific 231" (1923); with the operetta "Les aventures du roi Pausole" (1930) he turned, for once, to lighter music theatre.
