Biography

Ariel Dorfman was born in Buenos Aires in 1942 and, after his Jewish family emigrated, grew up first in the United States and, from 1954, in Chile. He studied comparative literature at the Universidad de Chile, where he also taught and served as a cultural adviser to the government of Salvador Allende. After the 1973 military coup he was forced into exile, living at various times in Argentina, the Netherlands and France before settling in the United States. Since 1985 he has taught as a professor of literature at Duke University in North Carolina. His work, including novels, essays and plays such as 'Death and the Maiden', repeatedly addresses the themes of dictatorship, exile and memory.
