Biography
Antônio Carlos Gomes was born on 11 July 1836 in Campinas, the son of a bandmaster, and composed his first pieces for his father's brass band while still a teenager. Following early stage successes at the Rio de Janeiro Conservatory, Emperor Pedro II sponsored a scholarship for him at the Milan Conservatory in 1864, where he studied composition with Lauro Rossi. With the opera 'Il Guarany', Gomes achieved a triumphant success at Milan's La Scala in 1870, making him the first composer from the New World whose work won broad recognition in Europe. Further operas such as 'Lo schiavo' (1889) followed, and Gomes spent the rest of his life moving between Italy and Brazil. He died on 16 September 1896 in Belém, in the Brazilian state of Pará.
