Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein

1829 – 1894 · Russian

Biography

Anton Rubinstein was born in 1829 in Vykhvatynets in Podolia (in present-day Moldova) and died in 1894 in Peterhof near Saint Petersburg. After early piano lessons from his mother and from Alexander Villoing in Moscow, he performed publicly as a child and, from 1840, undertook extensive concert tours across Europe, where he met Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin. He studied composition in Berlin from 1844 to 1846 under Siegfried Dehn. In 1859 he founded the Russian Musical Society, and in 1862 the Imperial Conservatory in Saint Petersburg, which he directed until 1867 and again from 1887. As a pianist he ranked alongside Liszt among the defining virtuosos of his era; as a composer he left operas, six symphonies and five piano concertos, among other works.
