Biography
Antoine Mariotte was born on 22 December 1875 in Avignon and died on 30 November 1944. After training at naval school and several years as a naval officer, he turned to music, studying at the Schola Cantorum in Paris under Vincent d'Indy. From 1902 to 1919 he taught at the Orléans Conservatory, becoming its director in 1920; from 1936 to 1938 he directed the Paris Opéra-Comique. His principal work, the opera "Salomé" after Oscar Wilde, was overshadowed by a rights dispute with Richard Strauss's publisher and by the greater fame of Strauss's own opera of the same title.
