Biography
Anouk van Dijk was born in 1965 in Velp in the Dutch province of Gelderland and graduated from the Rotterdam Dance Academy in 1985. For around ten years she danced as a soloist, including with the Rotterdam Dance Group and Amanda Miller’s Pretty Ugly Dance Company; during this period she developed the foundations of Countertechnique, a method that relies on constant counter-movements rather than a fixed centre of the body. In 1998 she founded her own company, anoukvandijk dc, in Amsterdam, which she led until 2012. With Falk Richter she created “Nothing Hurts” in 1999, which was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen; further joint works followed, including “Trust” at the Schaubühne in Berlin, “Rausch” at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, “Complexity of Belonging” (2014) with Chunky Move, “Touch” at the Münchner Kammerspiele and, in 2025, “A Perfect Sky” at the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus in Hamburg. From 2012 to 2019 she was artistic director of the Australian company Chunky Move in Melbourne. In 2012 she received the Gouden Zwaan, the most important Dutch dance award, for her body of work.
