Biography
Annett Gröschner was born on 7 February 1964 in Magdeburg, worked as a wardrobe assistant at Theater Magdeburg after finishing school, and studied German literature in East Berlin and Paris from 1983 to 1991. She has lived in Berlin since the mid-1980s, co-founded the women's magazine „Ypsilon“ and the artists' initiative Xanthippe, and worked as a historian for the Prenzlauer Berg Museum from 1992 to 1996. Since 1997 she has written as a freelance author and journalist for publications including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, taz and Freitag; her best-known books include the novels „Moskauer Eis“ (2000) and „Walpurgistag“ (2011). In 2024 she published the conversational book „Drei ostdeutsche Frauen betrinken sich und gründen den idealen Staat“ together with Peggy Mädler and Wenke Seemann, which was also staged as a play at Staatsschauspiel Dresden. Her work has been honoured with the Großer Kunstpreis Berlin (Fontane Prize) and the Klopstock Prize, among others, and in 2025 she served as the city of Mainz's writer-in-residence.
