Biography

Anne Jelena Schulte was born in Berlin-Schöneberg in 1976 and studied scenic writing at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). Her play “Antoniusfeuer” opened at Theater Ulm in 2007, followed by premieres at the Maxim Gorki Theater (“Die Hofmeister”), the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus (“Worringer Schlachten”) and the Deutsches Theater Berlin (“Wodka-Käfer”), among others. Her texts mostly grow out of thorough research and long conversations – a way of working also shaped by her many years of writing for the obituaries page of the Berlin daily “Tagesspiegel”, which portrays recently deceased Berliners who were not famous. Later premieres include “La Bohème // Träume” at Schauspiel Leipzig (2021), “Zukunftsmusik” in Regensburg (2022), “Die Alleinunterhalterin” at Theater Bielefeld (2023) and “Antiope”, a new play after the lost drama by Euripides, at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg (2024). The premiere of her play “The truest True Crime” is announced for December 2026 at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
