Biography
Andrea Petković was born in 1987 in Tuzla in what was then Yugoslavia; when she was six months old her family moved to Germany, and she grew up in Darmstadt, where she took her Abitur at the Georg-Büchner-Schule in 2006. As a tennis professional she won seven singles titles on the WTA Tour, reached number 9 in the world rankings in October 2011, made the semi-finals of the French Open in 2014 and reached the Fed Cup final with the German team. After a first-round defeat at the US Open she ended her career in August 2022. She had already emerged as a writer while still competing: her literary debut, the story collection “Zwischen Ruhm und Ehre liegt die Nacht”, was published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch in 2020, followed in 2024 by “Zeit, sich aus dem Staub zu machen”, about leaving professional sport. Since 2019 she has also presented the “Sportstudio-Reportage” on ZDF, and since 2023 she has co-hosted the literary programme “Seitenwechsel” on Zeit Online with Volker Weidermann.
