Biography
André Previn was born Andreas Ludwig Priwin in Berlin in 1929 and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1938; he died in New York in 2019. After early piano studies in Berlin and Paris, he worked from the 1940s as a jazz pianist and Hollywood film composer, winning four Academy Awards. From 1969 to 1979 he was principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and also led the Houston, Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles orchestras, among others. Alongside film scores, Previn composed operas, symphonies, and chamber music, including "A Streetcar Named Desire" after Tennessee Williams. He received ten Grammy Awards, was made an honorary KBE in 1996, and was awarded Germany's Grand Cross of the Order of Merit with Star in 2011.
