André Messager

Biography

André Messager was born on 30 December 1853 in Montluçon and died on 24 February 1929 in Paris. He studied at the École Niedermeyer, notably under Camille Saint-Saëns, and became organist at Saint-Sulpice in 1874. From 1898 he conducted at the Opéra-Comique, where he oversaw the premieres of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande and Charpentier's Louise, and served as artistic director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, from 1901 to 1906. From 1908 to 1914 he headed the Paris Opéra. As a composer he wrote the ballet Les Deux Pigeons alongside numerous operettas and opéras comiques such as Véronique, Les p'tites Michu and Fortunio.
