Biography
André Cardinal Destouches was born in Paris in 1672 and educated by the Jesuits at the Collège Louis-le-Grand. After a brief spell as a missionary in Siam and as a soldier, he turned to music and became a pupil of André Campra. His pastorale héroïque Issé brought him spectacular success at the court of Louis XIV in 1697, and further stage works followed. From 1713 he led the Académie royale de musique (today's Paris Opera), first as inspector general and later as director, and became Surintendant of the King's music after Campra's death in 1744. He died in Paris in 1749.
