Biography
Amanda Lasker-Berlin, born in Essen in 1994, is a novelist and playwright who also directs for the stage. She trained in fine art at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, in theatre directing at the Akademie für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg and in creative writing in Hull, England. Her debut novel “Elijas Lied” came out in 2020 and won the lit.COLOGNE debut prize; “Iva atmet” (2021) and “Spes heißt Hoffnung” (2022) followed. In 2021 her play “Ich, Wunderwerk und How Much I Love Disturbing Content” was one of the winning texts of the Autor:innentheatertage, premiered as a co-production of Deutsches Theater Berlin and Schauspielhaus Graz and earned her the Hermann Sudermann Prize for drama. In 2024 Theater Ulm staged her version of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and “Madonnen”, which links the lives of women across three generations, while “Jahre ohne Sommer” premiered in Bamberg the same year. Her rewriting of Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata” opened at the Bad Hersfeld Festival in 2026, and she has translated Anna Gmeyner’s exile play “Ende einer Verhandlung” into German.
