Biography
Alfredo Casella was born on 25 July 1883 in Turin and died on 5 March 1947 in Rome. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Gabriel Fauré, where he came to know Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky. As a pianist, conductor and critic he championed contemporary music and later taught at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. His own compositions combined neoclassical clarity with Italian tradition and a sharp rhythmic profile. Casella played a major role in the rediscovery of Antonio Vivaldi and founded the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi shortly before his death in 1947. The 1938 fascist race laws, which threatened his wife of Jewish descent, put him at odds with the regime he had previously supported.
