Biography
Alfred Jarry was born on 8 September 1873 in Laval and died on 1 November 1907 in Paris. At the lycée in Rennes he and his classmates mocked their physics teacher, M. Hébert, whose caricature became the seed of the Ubu character; after moving to Paris to study, he joined the city's Symbolist literary and artistic circles. In 1896 he became general manager of Aurélien Lugné-Poe's avant-garde Théâtre de l'Œuvre, where his play Ubu Roi premiered that December. He later developed the Ubu material into his parodic science of 'Pataphysics'; impoverished and marked by heavy drinking, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 34.
