Biography
Alfred de Musset was born on 11 December 1810 in Paris and died there on 2 May 1857. After abandoning studies in law and medicine, he joined Victor Hugo's literary circle as a young poet and published his first collection of poetry in 1830. His relationship with George Sand, begun in 1833 and broken off in Venice in the winter of 1833/34, left a deep mark on his later work, feeding into the semi-autobiographical novel "The Confession of a Child of the Century" (1836), among others. Because plays such as "Lorenzaccio" and "No Trifling with Love" were originally conceived as closet dramas for reading rather than performance, most did not reach the stage until decades after they were written; in 1852 Musset was elected to the Académie française.
