Alexei Konstantinowitsch Tolstoi

1817 – 1875 · Russian

Biography

Alexei Konstantinovich Tolstoy was born in 1817 in Saint Petersburg, grew up at the imperial court, and was a childhood friend of the future Tsar Alexander II. Alongside poetry and prose, he wrote a dramatic trilogy on Russia's sixteenth- and seventeenth-century succession of tsars: "The Death of Ivan the Terrible," "Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich," and "Tsar Boris." Because their portrayal of tsarist power was considered too candid, only the first part reached the stage during his lifetime; the other two were not performed until after his death, following decades in which they were effectively kept off the stage. Tolstoy died in 1875 on his estate at Krasny Rog.
