Biography

Alexandre Bisson was born on 9 April 1848 in Briouze, Normandy, and died on 27 January 1912 in Paris. After early years as a tutor to Norman aristocratic families and a post at the French Ministry of Public Instruction, he had his first stage success in 1873 with the comedy Quatre coups de canif. He went on to write numerous vaudevilles and farces for the major Paris theatres, including Der Schlafwagen-Kontrolleur (1898) and, with Edmond Gondinet, Un voyage d'agrément (1881). His greatest success came in 1908 with the drama Madame X, which was also staged on Broadway with Sarah Bernhardt in the lead role. Bisson was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
